JAKOB LOEPP

January 29, 1929 - February 12, 2026

On a beautiful Manitoba winter morning laden with hoarfrost, Jack Loepp died peacefully at home, at the generous age of 97.

Jack was born to his parents, Cornelius Loepp and Emma Deister Loepp on January 29, 1929, in the upstairs bedroom of the farmhouse where he lived virtually all of his life.

He was the eldest of five children in a family of newly emigrated parents, who had fled the Russian revolution in the Ukraine.

In this wonderful new country of Canada, Jack learned early to be the eyes and ears for his parents. Unsurprisingly, he became a spokesperson long before he was an adult. This engrained sense of duty and the importance of appreciating the greater good would foster a lifetime of service to the larger community, provided with kindness and generosity.

In spite of the scarcity of the depression years, Jack fondly and often recalled stories of his childhood in a one room school and of his youth, amid the antics of local dances and parties. There was always enough to eat. The easy camaraderie and sense of belonging within the small Mennonite community, with nearby English and French neighbours in the Ste. Elizabeth area provided wonderful memories.

Jack settled into married life at the age of 26, having fallen in love with a local schoolteacher, Margret Friesen. They had a lifelong partnership of mutual respect and deep love for each other.

Jack cherished his position as lead lay minister at the Lichtenau Mennonite church, officiating at weddings and funerals and preaching countless sermons, some hastily assembled in harvest time and others curated over time.

Jack loved to talk. He used this skill to serve in multiple volunteer capacities in church conference work, benevolent work, and countless boards throughout his life. The most precious position was at the Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home.

As much as Jack professed to be a reluctant farmer, he loved the land. He was happy and content on the prairie among the grass and trees and gardens and fields. His other greatest joy came from his family. He was fiercely proud of them all. The entire family was privileged to have a gentle, kind, and loving father.

His memory is held dear by his wife of 70 years, Margret; his three daughters: Christine, Marlene, Ingrid and her husband Paul; six grandchildren and their partners: Kevin, Eric and Adriana, Christopher and Mireille, Tommy and Jessica, Karin and Mike, Evan and Angel; three great-grandchildren: Léonie, Owen and Claire; two brothers: Cornelius, George and his husband Bill, and two sisters-in-law, Neta and Helen. His sister Mary and baby brother Harry and several in-laws have predeceased him.

The funeral service for Jack Loepp will be held at Bethel Mennonite Church, 465 Stafford Street, on February 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with lunch to follow. The interment will be at Lichtenau Cemetery after the lunch.

Donations will be gratefully accepted by Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home.
